Mrs. Ruth
Johnson, who was a faithful church member and woman of God, started the
library ministry at York Terrace Baptist Church more than 30 years ago.
She was a school librarian in the Alabama school system for many
years. Mrs. Johnson was the
Library Director until 2001, when she retired.
She is presently living with her daughter in the Central Heights area
near Florence. The library was
named for Mr. F. W. Pirtle, a deacon and charter member of York Terrace
Baptist Church.
The present staff: Carolyn Andrews, Sue Dean, Joyce Lewey, Jeanette Norton, Gail Willis, and Carole Driskell, Director.
Hours of Operation: Sunday: 15 minutes before Sunday School & Discipleship Training 15 minutes after morning and evening worship services
Wednesday: 15 minutes before and after prayer service A summer reading program is held each year in June and July for all age groups. The program is well supported by the membership. Last year over 400 books were checked out during the summer reading program. The library is setup on the Dewey Decimal System and has been computerized. You will find traditional as well as the very latest Christian books written by the most popular Christian authors including: Max Lucado, Tony Evans, Charles Swindoll, Francine Rivers, Jan Karon, Dr. James Dobson, Jim Cymbala, Stormie Omartian, Beth Moore, and Bruce Wilkinson. There are over 5,000 books and 200 videos for children through adults in the library. The collection includes: fiction, biographies, self-help, marriage & family, Bible reference books, Christian life, poetry, youth, and recreation. If you know part of the name of a book or author or just the subject of interest, we can find the materials in the computer if it is in our library. Come in a check it out!
The library ministry seeks to have the kinds of books that our members
desire. We pray that the center
is a ministry that will help meet the everyday needs of all groups and
individual members of the church.
We welcome any suggestions or recommendations as to the kinds of
materials you would like to see in the library. Our goal is to be a resource for all the other ministries of
our church as they reach out into the community.
How to place a book or video in memory or honor
of a loved one: Give a check or cash to the church office or Carole Driskell. We will make the selection for you. This will avoid duplication. We will notify the family of your gift. A label will be placed on the book/video with the name of the loved one and donor.
